I was a bit hazy at first, so they gave me a brain scan and chest X-rays, but I'm OK."FORMULA 1 WORLD POWERBOAT CHAMPIONSHIP Ninth and final race (Abu Dhabi, UAE): 1 S Gillman (US, Seebold) 56min 32.85sec; 2 F Cantando (It, DAC) +38.69sec; 3 M Roggiero (It, DAC) +1 lap; 4 P Leppala (Fin, DAC) +1; 5 Y Sugihara (Japan, DAC) +1; 6 P Blackburn (GB, Burgess) +1. Selected: 9 A Marshall (GB, Seebold) + 3; 13 G Cappellini (It, DAC) +5. Did not finish: J Jones (GB, Burgess), A Elliott (GB, Burgess).. A unification fight between Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield appears a distant prospect as the British boxer's camp face up to finding an alternative opponent for the World Boxing Council heavyweight champion.
Attempts to pair Lewis with World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation holder Holyfield have run headlong into a cul-de-sac with apparently no chance of a U-turn. A fight with Shannon Briggs in Atlantic City on Friday, 6 Marchor James "Buster'' Douglas in Las Vegas on Saturday, 7 March looks the likely alternative."The Holyfield fight could be gone this weekend," Lewis' promoter, Panos Eliades, said "I haven't heard from Don King He's got the contracts and time is almost up I'm working on Briggs and Douglas. The deal with Douglas' promoter Bob Arum is done and we are just about to conclude the deal with Briggs' handlers Cedric Kushner and Mark Roberts."I don't know what Holyfield is hearing but he's not hearing the right noises. If Lewis-Holyfield is going to happen it's going to have to wait until later in the year That is what it's looking like I've done whatever I can. I've spent 200 hours on trying to get a fight with Holyfield It's frustrating. I can't work out where Holyfield is coming from in all this."Lennox says if we don't get the Holyfield deal done, we're off. Rather than lose your dates and moving on until June, you may as well get your other fights done."Holyfield's hand will be forced when the winner emerges from today's WBA title final eliminator between Britain's Henry Akinwande and Orlin Norris in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The fight was ordered by a US judge and Holyfield must fight Akinwande or Norris by 28 June to further complicate an already confused heavyweight picture.Tonight in Sheffield, just 23 days past his 23rd birthday, Ryan Rhodes tackles the more experienced Canadian southpaw Otis Grant for the vacant World Boxing Organisation middleweight title at the Ponds Forge international centre. It is a sizeable rise in class for a prospect of 16 professional fights and, if Rhodes passes the test, he will become Britain's youngest world champion since Jack "Kid" Berg in 1930.Technology is being provided for his friend Naseem Hamed to watch Rhodes' title attempt by satellite link-up in his hotel room in New York, where he is preparing for next Friday's world title fight with Kevin Kelley..
Steven Cousins looks to be on course for his eighth British title in nine years after winning last night's short programme in the men's section of the British Ice Figure and Dance Championships at the Hull Arena. The 25-year-old from North Wales gave what he described as his best display "for some time" to beat the defending champion, Neil Wilson. "The triple lutz was huge Maybe I was too charged up. I really wanted to do well and I nearly crashed into the barrier," a smiling Cousins said.In contrast, Wilson's triple axel combination was slightly flawed, but this was only the second time the 19-year-old from Belfast had tried the difficult three-and-a-half turn in competition.Meanwhile, in the senior women's event Zoe Jones, who was given the chance to prove she was worthy of Olympic selection at this event, withdrew due to injury just prior to the short programme. The 17-year-old, runner-up for the past three years, left the arena after early-morning practice in tears, but returned last night to cheer on her Swindon rink-mate Jenna Arrowsmith."It's not a bad, bad injury," Lesley Norfolk Pearce, who coaches both girls, said. "She tensed up on a jump and pulled a hamstring at the top of her left leg.Having all this publicity about the Olympic selection put so much pressure on her."Jones was told by the British Olympic Association that in order to go to the Games next February she had to land two triple jumps yesterday and four in today's final.. John Higgins kept his nerve to fill another place in the German Open semi-final line-up, but now faces the acid test against the defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan. World No 2 Higgins defeated Anthony Hamilton 5-4 to join O'Sullivan and world champion Ken Doherty as last-gasp quarter-final winners. All three of the last-eight matches have now been settled by a deciding frame, leaving Stephen Hendry and John Parrott to try to break the sequence.Yesterday never more than a frame separated Higgins and his Nottingham rival.
The 22-year-old from Wishaw led on three occasions while quarter- final novice Hamilton, the world No 14, made a break of 67 to go 3-2 up.The underdog later had a couple of chances to win the final frame, but failed to make the most of his opportunity. He missed a pink into the middle pocket early on and then missed a make-or-break long red when 45- 5 behind. Higgins made a decisive 25 and Hamilton shook hands with three reds remaining.Jim McKenzie, sacked last month as chief executive of the sport's governing body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association, has issued a writ against the organisation for breach of contract. He has written to WPBSA members denying allegations reported to have been made against him in a letter to the rank and file by the chairman, Rex Williams. McKenzie also made claims about where the WPBSA, and the sport as a whole, are going wrong..
On Thursday morning England got up at 3.30, and caught a 5.30 train ride seven hours long to this unprepossessing industrial town. In their hotel, the noise in some rooms of mysterious machinery was so loud that the floor shook. Cockroaches were sighted, there was a potent smell of rancid fat, and during the night several players reported people rattling and banging at their bolted doors. their general reaction? "It could be worse." Yesterday morning, England set a new record womens' World Cup total of 376 for 2 against Pakistan at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium. The second-wicket stand of 203 between Jan Brittin and Barbara Daniels was also a record, passing the 167 set by Australia's Emerson and Kennare against India at New Zealand's Eden Park in 1982. Britain's 138 came off 124 balls in 150 minutes, and included 17 fours; Daniels needed only 103 balls in 130 minutes for her 142 not out, with 17 fours and one six.
